To provide a more flexible way to build, scale and deploy applications and reduce the time and expense of cloud, IBM is working on an open integration model with Docker and the open source Docker project community.

In the wake of the Heartbleed OpenSSL crisis, The Linux Foundation formed a multi-million dollar project to fund and support critical elements of the global information infrastructure. Founding backers of the Core Infrastructure Initiative (CII) include Amazon Web Services, Cisco, Dell, Facebook, Fujitsu, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NetApp, Rackspace, VMware, and The Linux Foundation, who were joined by additional founding members Adobe, Bloomberg, HP, Huawei, and salesforce.com.

To help developers quickly integrate applications and speed deployment of new cloud services, IBM has added more than 30 new cloud services that are available in Bluemix, its platform-as-a-service (PaaS). IBM is also launching Bluemix Garages, collaborative locations where developers can create new apps on Bluemix, learn new development skills, and access IBM's developer ecosystem.

The operating system most relied upon by OpenStack users is Linux from a variety of distributors, and the hypervisor in greatest use is KVM (Kernel-based Virtualization Machine), according to the OpenStack 2014 Spring User Survey. The survey was conducted during April 2014 to gather information and feedback from organizations using OpenStack for development/QA, proofs-of-concept, and in production.

Samsung Electronics has introduced the Samsung Z, the first commercially available smartphone powered by the Tizen platform. The Samsung Z is optimized with a Tizen platform that offers fast and powerful software performance.

Canonical recently announced the availability of Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS, Ubuntu OpenStack and Juju service orchestration tools on IBM POWER8 systems. What does this mean for Ubuntu users?

The newest release of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization adds enhancements for traditional virtualization infrastructure, guest support for the newly released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, as well as advanced OpenStack support across compute, storage and networking in tech preview.

SUSE has announced the general availability of SUSE Manager 2.1, a Linux server management solution built to manage both SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

For the first time, with the 14.04 release, Ubuntu offers support for IBM POWER8. Ubuntu for POWER8 brings the Ubuntu Server and the OpenStack ecosystem to POWER8 enabling its ease of entry into the scale-out and cloud markets.
