Less than a year after announcing a $1 billion commitment to Linux on Power, IBM has delivered new Power Systems running Linux. The new scale out Power Systems are built from the ground up to harness big data with the new IBM POWER8 processor, a sliver of silicon that measures just one square inch, which is embedded with more than 4 billion microscopic transistors and more than 11 miles of high-speed copper wiring.

To support the growth of System z Linux and cloud solutions, IBM has launched the world's first dedicated System z Linux and Cloud Center of Competency in Beijing. The center will enable customers to take advantage of Linux and cloud computing solutions on the mainframe, and help accelerate adoption of Linux on System z technologies in China.

IBM PowerKVM is now generally available, providing an open virtualization choice for IBM scale-out Linux systems based on the POWER8 technology. The solution includes the Linux open source technology of Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM) virtualization, and is designed to complement the performance, scalability and security qualities of Linux. This provides an open extendable solution for running VMs on Linux scale-out servers that enables cloud deployments, scale-out processing, and big data solutions reducing complexity and cost.

Helping companies migrate to software defined environments, IBM announced at the recent OpenStack Summit that it is expanding its support of open technologies by providing advanced OpenStack integration and cloud virtualization and management capabilities across the entire IBM server portfolio with IBM Cloud Manager with OpenStack.

Red Hat has announced the latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In a new blog post, Adam Jollans, Program Director - Cross-IBM Linux and Open Virtualization Strategy, IBM Systems & Technology Group, highlighted why RHEL 7 is significant for Red Hat, IBM, and most importantly customers.
