IBM is spearheading the development and adoption of Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) for financial services firms. On May 2, IBM will launch the KVM Center of Excellence for Wall Street located in New York City with a grand opening event for IBM clients and business partners in the financial services industry. This center will act as the hub for KVM-related trainings, client and partner briefings and thought leadership.

Avnet Technology Solutions, a global IT solutions distribution leader and an operating group of Avnet, Inc., has selected IBM SmartCloud as the foundation for Avnet Cloud Solutions, a portfolio of cloud offerings for small and midsize businesses in India.

The Linux Foundation, the non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux, announced the founding of the OpenDaylight Project, a community-led and industry-supported open source framework that will accelerate adoption, foster new innovation and create a more open and transparent approach to software-defined networking (SDN).

What is driving KVM's momentum in the enterprise? That question is addressed in a new blog by Radhesh Balakrishnan, Global Leader, Virtualization, Red Hat, and Jean Staten Healy, Director, Worldwide Linux and Open Virtualization, IBM, in which they reflect on KVM's growing strength.

The Xen Project - an open source virtualization platform licensed under the GPLv2 with a similar governance structure to the Linux kernel - is becoming a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project. Commenting on the support for Xen and how that relates to KVM, Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin writes in a blog, "The open source model is predicated upon freedom of choice, so supporting a range of open source virtualization platforms and facilitating collaboration across open source communities is a priority for The Linux Foundation."

IBM hosts Linux on System z Executive Council meetings in locations across the United States to provide education on Linux on System z. Computerworld's Open Business Conference (OSBC) will take place April 29-30 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco. As part of the conference, the Open Virtualization Alliance (OVA) will present a panel discussion on how far open virtualization has come since OSBC last year, where KVM solutions are being used today, and what's next for the OVA. The session, "Virtualization Opens Up: KVM, OpenStack and the Virtualization of Everything," is scheduled for Monday, April 29, at 3 pm.

The oVirt Community and Intel are hosting an oVirt Workshop in Shanghai on May 8th and 9th at Intel's Shanghai Campus. oVirt is an open and comprehensive data center virtualization management suite.

Registration is open for SUSECon, SUSE's annual global user conference. The event will be held November 12-15, 2013, at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

SUSE Studio 1.3 is now available for ISVs and enterprise data centers. SUSE Studio helps customers build software application images in several formats and then deploy them on physical hardware in virtualized environments or cloud environments.
