RESERVOIR, a European Union-funded research initiative launched in 2008 to develop technologies that help automate the fluctuating demand for IT resources in a cloud computing environment, has released a breakthrough around live migration for virtual machines. With this announcement, new open source technology becomes widely available to the cloud community. The technology makes it possible to move virtual machines across environments that do not have shared storage networks.

IBM's World Community Grid, a worldwide network of PC owners helping scientists solve humanitarian challenges, has kicked off several computing projects aimed at developing techniques to produce cleaner and safer water, an increasingly scarce commodity for 1.2 billion people worldwide.

IBM has announced details of the world's fastest computer chip - the microprocessor in a new version of the IBM mainframe that began shipping to customers on Sept. 10. The new zEnterprise technology is the result of an investment of more than $1.5 billion in IBM research and development in the zEnterprise line, as well as more than 3 years of collaboration with some of IBM's top clients around the world.
