Linux is moving to the core of business and is now considered a suitable candidate for deployments of business-critical workloads, according to a new IDC white paper authored by Al Gillen, program vice president, system software, IDC. Linux is the fastest growing operating system in terms of percentage growth of new unit subscriptions as well as revenue growth, making it evident that customers see its business value.
IBM has introduced new services and programs to help more companies migrate from Sun and HP servers to IBM's System z, particularly on the Linux platform. The goal of the new Server Consolidation and Migration Services offering is to help customers "lower their costs and get on to a world-class consolidation platform," Karl Freund, vice president of System z strategy in IBM's Systems and Technology group, tells 5 Minute Briefing.
Gruppo Amadori, a wholesale distributor of quality food products in Italy, is rolling out Linux-based desktops running IBM email, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software to select employees.
