Database Performance in the New Cloud World
patchVantage has announced the addition of data masking functionality to its suite of Oracle Database and ERP management tools, which includes backup, cloning, patching, penetration testing, and password management. Data masking—a key technology for companies that need to comply with GDPR and other data privacy regulations—allows sensitive data to be hidden or obscured to protect against insider threats. It makes information available only to authorized users, minimizing risk, yet still allowing development and testing by third parties.
Silwood Technology Ltd., provider of self-service metadata discovery software, is entering a global reseller agreement with IDERA, a provider of database productivity tools. Through this agreement, IDERA will market and resell Safyr to complement its ER/Studio data modeling and architecture product suite.
Think About It
There's been a lot of discussion recently about autonomous databases, which offer the promise of keeping database systems stable and performant while alleviating much of the tuning and configuration drudgery that DBAs must typically slog through. It is important to note that an autonomous database needs to strike a balance between giving administrators too much and too little control. Too much control takes the form of endless configuration and tuning parameters that place the burden of performance and stability on the operator. Too little control takes the form of automated behaviors that reduce the predictability of the system to an unacceptable level.

While migrating Oracle applications from physical to virtual OVM environments can be straightforward, it is important to take into consideration configuration issues regarding the interaction of the Operating System environment to the Virtual Environment. There are some gotchas which can complicate an installation despite assiduous attention to the installation and migration instructions.
