Major technology trends are reshaping the DBA role at many organizations. The size and complexity of database environments continues to grow with higher data volumes, more workloads, and an increasing rate of database deployments that need to be managed.
What's more, new data types and emerging applications continue to drive the adoption of new types of databases.
Heterogeneity rules the day at most IT departments. Altogether, DBAs are under constant pressure in a constantly evolving environment -- fighting fires to keep the lights on while navigating the impact of cloud and automation on their daily jobs.

Enterprises need to increase their data maturity, Gallagher explained. It’s a requirement of effective digital transformation. This requires organizations to manage more of the four Vs. Large volumes of data across a variety of: Sources, Architectures, Purposes, Destinations with stringent vigilance, delivered at high velocities.
DBAs are facing a multitude of challenges today, Sizemore agreed. This includes:
- Agility and innovation: speed of deployment (both Infrastructure and code)
- Cost and efficiency: reduced operational costs and complexity, workforce productivity
- Reliability: Guaranteed SLAs for different services, HA and DR needs
- Scalability: rapid scale down and up, seasonal scaling
- Security
Cloud is the future, she said, and DBAs need to be familiar with hybrid cloud and multi-cloud approaches.
To future proof their careers, DBAs can expand their skills intelligently on other technologies like Blockchain or AI; become a data architect, data engineer, master data analytics, be a data scientist, database migration specialist or database security specialist.
Form a strategic partnership with a Managed Service Provider (MSP), Sizemore said. This enables you and team to focus on internal strategic projects and initiatives.
