Effective data governance improves the usability, integrity, and security of enterprise data. As organizations gather, store and access increasing volumes of data, strong data governance allows them to have confidence in the quality of that data for a variety of tasks as well adhere to security and privacy standards.
However, according to Scott Zoldi, Big Data Quarterly columnist vice president of Analytic Science at FICO, as the excitement around big data tools escalates, many organizations are discovering that their big data initiatives are originating outside existing data management policies. As a result, he notes, many concepts of formal data governance are either intentionally or unintentionally omitted as they race to ingest new data streams in the hope of increased insight and new analytic value.
With the game-changing potential posed by big data from a range of new sources both inside and outside the organization, organizations must ensure the quality and veracity of their data as never before in order to be sure it can be trusted. They must also assure that the data that comes from outside the organization is as reliable as data generated internally. To address these challenges, organizations should support governance, data quality, master data and data lifecycle management, and data security initiatives. Strong data governance solutions support data quality, protect sensitive data, promote effective sharing of information, and help manage information through its lifecycle from creation to deletion with adherence to regulatory and government requirements.
