While AI has been the talk of science fiction-aficionados and tech-enthusiasts for many years, it wasn’t until the tail-end of 2022 that AI entered the mainstream conversation with generative AI and the popularity of ChatGPT technologies.
With the COVID-19 pandemic as an accelerant, the last 4 years have seen dramatic changes in IT project focus, priorities, and ways of working, according to F5’s “2024 State of Application Strategy Report.”
A new Foundry survey showed IT leaders are “all-in” on the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) can help them address a longstanding struggle with enterprise networks: Making day-to-day management of networks easier.
The 110 senior IT leaders identified these objectives for pursuing AI in networking, each chosen by 30% or more of respondents:
- Data-driven decision-making
- Compliance and risk management
- Enhancing quality of service (QoS) and user experience
- Improving network reliability and uptime
However, challenges still remain when implementing AI, as the survey identified these top 4:
- Safeguarding the network against AI-specific threats
- Ensuring the long-term sustainability of AI initiatives
- Allocating resources effectively between AI and other initiatives
- Keeping up with the rapid pace of AI networking technology evolution
Meanwhile, by the beginning of 2024, 87% of companies surveyed by Bain said that they were already developing, piloting, or have deployed generative AI in some capacity, with most of these early deployments in software code development, customer service, marketing and sales, and product differentiation.
Bain’s latest survey finds that companies are investing heavily in generative AI—on average, about $5 million annually, with an average of 100 employees dedicating at least some of their time to generative AI.
Among large companies, about 20% are investing up to $50 million per year. These investments reflect their focus as more than 60% of companies surveyed see generative AI as a top three priority over the next two years, but only about 35% have a clearly defined vision for how they will create business value from generative AI.
