The U.S. Department of Defense, perhaps the world’s largest consumer of information technology with a #35 billion-a-year IT budget, recently announced ambitious plans to scale down its data center environments. The DoD recently published a “vision document” that asserts that cloud computing and consolidation are essential to efforts to meet data center reduction goals. The goal is to reduce the department’s 3,000-plus data centers – an effort that is taking longer than expected.
