The desire to compete on analytics is driving the adoption of new technologies such as NoSQL and Hadoop to store and process large volumes of data.
These technologies offer important new capabilities. However, they also require new skills as they challenge many well-established conventions in data management.
Meanwhile, enterprises use older legacy hardware such as relational databases and data warehouses. SQL and its widespread use is not changing anytime soon.
To maximize the value of its analytics investments, enterprises need to incorporate big data into their enterprise data management strategies.
Jamie Morgan, senior solutions architect at HPE Security - Data Security, and Kevin Petrie, senior director and technology evangelist at Attunity, recently discussed key technologies and best practices for data integration, data quality, and data security during a DBTA roundtable webinar.
Securing Hadoop is difficult because there is rapid innovation in a well funded open source community, multiple feeds of data in real time from different sources with different protection needs, and there are multiple types of data combined in a Hadoop “Data Lake,” Morgan explained.
He introduced the concept of “data-centric” security.
“The approach with data security is to protect that data at the field level,” Morgan said.
By applying format-preserving encryption, users can allow wider access to their data lake. HPE SecureData with FPE is available on virtually all platforms. It can protect once, decrypt rarely, and be used everywhere, according to Morgan.
Petrie explained the challenges users face when managing data. These issues include complex and costly data movement across heterogeneous systems and new platforms, long times to deliver value in analytics due to manually intensive processes and lack of agility, and a lack of insight in managing data efficiently as volumes and workloads scale.
