In a new report in the Financial Times, Microsoft research chief Rick Rashid is quoted as saying that up to 20% of all the servers sold around the world each year are now being bought by a small handful of cloud companies-such as Microsoft, Google, Yahoo and Amazon. This is evidence of a huge movement toward cloud computing. Rashid suggests that this shift means more than simply moving current existing applications to a cloud model-it means the potential for new types of applications that haven't even been thought of yet.
