Can Old Batteries Power Today’s New Data Centers?

Recent press reports indicate that General Motors is partially running a data center on old Chevy Volt batteries. The batteries’ voltage is too low to continue powering the electric vehicles, but still have enough juice to be functional. The batteries provide back-up power to keep their data center up to four hours in the event of an outage, offering a potentially low-cost source of auxiliary power.
