Security threats to data in an organization are diverse. Data in an Oracle database, backup files, and export files must be protected from theft and to comply with government regulations. Transparent data encryption (TDE) can be used to encrypt data to safeguard against theft. Since Oracle Database 10g, sensitive columns can be transparently encrypted in the database. They remain encrypted on any media outside the database, for protection against media theft and for compliance with regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA. In Oracle Database 11g, whole tablespaces can be efficiently encrypted, allowing full use of indexes against encrypted data. This session covers the performance, space requirements and protection offered by TDE.
