Yugabyte, the company behind YugabyteDB—the open-source, high-performance distributed SQL database for building global, cloud-native applications—is announcing the latest version of its database, YugabyteDB 2.25. Now featuring complete compatibility with PostgreSQL 15 and a variety of new capabilities, YugabyteDB 2.25 aims to meet its customers wherever they are on their PostgreSQL journeys, according to the company.
YugabyteDB 2.25 specifically focuses on the ability to bring enterprises peace of mind as they upgrade or downgrade PostgreSQL versions. Now, YugabyteDB 2.25 users can easily upgrade to the latest version of PostgreSQL or revert to a previous version as their data infrastructure demands—without disrupting applications.
“Although PostgreSQL remains the most popular database among developers, a factor that slows down adoption of newer PostgreSQL features or innovations is the risks upgrading can bring, especially the potential impact on existing applications,” said Karthik Ranganathan, co-founder and co-CEO of Yugabyte.
“We have put significant time and resources into developing an efficient process and reusable framework for quickly adopting future PostgreSQL versions. This includes seamless fallback and downgrade options that eliminate disruption for YugabyteDB users as they explore and innovate using the latest PostgreSQL features,” continued Ranganathan. “This new release is the culmination of a long-term project to ensure customers benefit from the innovative features included in later versions of PostgreSQL and are well placed to quickly and seamlessly adopt future PostgreSQL versions.”
Newfound compatibility with the latest version of PostgreSQL—as well as other new features—enhances the power of YugabyteDB, which now offers:
- Access to the latest PostgreSQL advancements, including generated columns, foreign keys on partitioned tables, and multi-range aggregates for enhanced data modeling and querying
- Seamless upgrades and downgrades to newer or older PostgreSQL versions, eliminating downtime and ensuring business continuity, disaster recovery, and unimpacted change data capture (CDC)
- Increased scalability and resilience delivered by YugabyteDB’s distributed architecture, additionally offering high availability and global data distribution paired with excellent performance
- Enterprise-grade features—often only delivered in “enterprise” versions—such as zero-downtime upgrades, frictionless backups and restores, and efficient disaster recovery, all while maintaining low-latency transactions in geographically distributed environments
“We are excited about YugabyteDB's Postgres 15 launch and, in particular, looking forward to the many added features which will help as we migrate from SQL Server to YugabyteDB," said Kevin Visscher, software engineer, New Black.
