Veryant, a COBOL and Java technology vendor, announced that Transoft, a data access platform provider, is enabling Veryant users to make their converted ISAM files available to a range of new platforms.
Veryant's isCOBOL Application Platform Suite (APS) suits is designed to protect and extend enterprise application assets by blending the optimized, business-oriented nature of COBOL with the openness and portability of the Java platform without requiring businesses to retrain staff or rewrite code, the vendor says.
Veryant says that Transoft has certified its Transoft U/SQL Adapters for use with isCOBOL APS. This qualification enables U/SQL users to deploy the same functionality when they move COBOL programs to isCOBOL APS and provides enhanced capabilities for current isCOBOL platform users.
Transoft U/SQL Adapters provide relational database ODBC and JDBC access to non-relational data. The adapters allow COBOL programs and Windows products to seamlessly access ISAM files as if they are a relational database. With Transoft U/SQL Adapters, direct links from legacy data sources can be created into spreadsheets, word processing documents, report writers, business intelligence tools, and decision support products.
"ISAM files are currently accessible by front-end applications such as spreadsheets and word processing programs through isCOBOL ISAM ODBC," Alfredo Iglesias, vice president of business development for Veryant, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "Since the isCOBOL Compiler generates pure Java output, isCOBOL applications, data, and user interfaces seamlessly integrate with Web 2.0 solutions, JEE application servers, Web servers, and mobile devices."
The latest certification from Transoft enables Veryant users to deploy beyond their current base of Windows-based end user environments, Iglesias continues. "Veryant's isCOBOL ISAM ODBC offering is currently a Windows-only based solution," he says. "Transoft's U/SQL Adapters are widely adopted in the industry and provide direct ODBC and JDBC ISAM file access on multiple platforms including Linux, Unix, and Windows. Now we can enable efficient access to ISAM data on a range of operating system environments and in both local and client/server configurations."
