Veeam Software Group, a provider of backup, replication and virtualization management solutions for VMware vSphere and Windows Sever Hyper-V, has released Veeam Backup & Replication Cloud Edition. According to the vendor, the solution turns public storage cloud into a data repository for backups, enabling an alternative to tape and traditional offsite backup storage.
Veeam Backup Cloud Edition supports 15 different public storage clouds, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Rackpsace, and HP Cloud. Veeam also has have private cloud options built on OpenStack, Rick Vanover, Veeam product strategy specialist, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The copying of local backups to the cloud occurs automatically on a schedule, and they are compressed, deduplicated, and protected with up to AES 256-bit encryption.
“Compression and encryption are two big deals; compression for efficiency and encryption for data confidentiality in the public cloud,” Vanover explains. Additional features include job notifications through emailed reports that keep IT informed on backups copied to the cloud, as well as cloud cost estimation and bandwidth scheduling to control bandwidth in real time.
According to the Veeam, Backup & Replication Cloud Edition is non-disruptive, with no need to learn cloud storage APIs, and no interruption or impact to local backup or recovery operations.
