At VMworld going on in San Francisco this week, Unitrends, a provider of enterprise-level cloud recovery, introduced Unitrends Free support for the free VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi).
Unitrends Free is a free backup solution in the form of a virtual appliance that delivers enterprise-class backup and recovery capabilities for free ESXi environments as well as protection for both physical Windows and virtual systems – for up to 1 terabyte (TB) of data.
Unitrends Free now enables customers to install into and protect virtual machines (VMs) running on VMware’s free vSphere hypervisor and protect physical Windows systems via guest operating system agents.
With an interactive user experience, Unitrends Free eliminates the complexity of backup and recovery as well as robust functionality or performance. The product provides protection for an unlimited number of VMs; instant recovery; and "incremental forever" backups.
IT professionals also have direct access to the Unitrends Customer Community from the software’s main dashboard, giving them the ability to interact directly with their peers and Unitrends support without ever having to exit out of the tool.

The solution was initially introduced in May 2015, offering hypervisor-level protection for the paid versions of VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. The company has since made available Unitrends Free for Google Cloud Platform, a jointly developed version of the solution that tightly integrates with Google Cloud Storage.
