Teradata Updates Data Warehouse Appliance, Engine

Teradata, a data analytic data solutions provider, announced the latest update to its flagship data warehouse product, as well as new features in its data warehouse appliance. Teradata Database 14 is designed as the analytical engine for powering all of the vendor's "purpose-built" platform family members - from enterprise data warehouses to appliances.

"We're including big data application support," says Scott Gnau, president of Teradata Labs at a briefing at the vendor's recent user group event. "Teradata doesn't see the big data faction as just petabytes under management. It offers more consistent response times, and opens up real-time analytics."

Teradata is promoting a "parallel-everything" design and optimizer designed for intelligently processing all types of analytical and business intelligence queries. With "set-and-go" optimization options, Teradata provides powerful embedded analytics and advanced workload management. The latest release also includes support for geospatial analysis, and Teradata Columnar, which integrates hybrid row-and-column-oriented data for extreme performance and dramatic compression.

Teradata also announced the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2690, a fifth generation appliance designed to meet the diverse business intelligence needs of customers. This data warehouse appliance is a fully-integrated system that delivers double the performance and triple the data capacity of its predecessor, according to Teradata. The new appliance will be generally available in the first quarter of 2012.

To meet the diverse needs of customers, the appliance delivers an integrated analytic platform that can be configured from as few as two terabytes (TB) up to 315TB of uncompressed user data per cabinet. The performance metrics are equally impressive, scanning data at more than 38 gigabytes (GB) per second per cabinet.

Teradata also announced the Teradata Analytical Ecosystem, a portfolio of hardware, software, and services enables different Teradata systems to work together. The newest enabler of the portfolio, Teradata Unity, synchronizes and unifies a company's entire Teradata Analytical Ecosystem. "Teradata Unity allows customers to manage an analytical ecosystem," says Gnau. "Teradata Unity provides query routing and database synchronization across Teradata system.  It keeps data and databases synchronized across systems, maintains high availability, intelligently routes users and queries between them, and even transparently resubmits a user's query to an alternate system should the primary system be offline."

Components include Teradata Data Mover, which offers intelligent data movement between Teradata systems. Teradata Multi-System Manager also enables complete monitoring of the entire ecosystem through sophisticated analysis of components, processes, and data.

Teradata Unity, now being shipped, routes users between Teradata systems based on where the needed data resides. When more than one Teradata System contains the needed data, Teradata Unity intelligently routes the query based on processing resource availability to maximize system utilization. This intelligent routing ensures access for business users and low-maintenance for system administrators.

To further automate management of the Teradata Analytical Ecosystem, Teradata Unity keeps databases in synchronization by automatically applying database changes, such as adding or removing tables and performing data updates to multiple systems at once. This provides a benefit to the data warehouse staff by eliminating redundant work.

Teradata Unity is now available in the Americas and will be available in global markets by end of the year.
