Silver Peak Systems has announced Silver Peak Velocity, a combination of products, pricing and packaging that aims to allow storage administrators to accelerate their offsite replication workloads. SilverPeak Velocity is available for NetApp SnapMirror deployments, providing what the company says is on-average 20x faster offsite replication, and will be available for replication solutions from Dell, EMC, and Hitachi Data Systems in the coming months.
According to Silver Peak, to protect data and meet recovery point objectives (RPOs), storage administrators must continually replicate data, but when these replication workloads extend beyond the data center to remote disaster recovery sites over wide area networks (WANs), administrators must contend with the adverse effects of latency, congestion, and limited network capacity which can impair replication performance and compromise RPOs.
Silver Peak has been known in the WAN optimization space as the data center-class provider, selling into very large enterprises via partners such as Dell, EMC and HDS and go-to market partners in the channel, Larry Cormier, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Silver Peak, tells 5 Minute Briefing. With Velocity, he says, Silver Peak is targeting the next segment down, the small-to-medium enterprise, by greatly simplifying the deployment of the product, and accelerating the time-to-value for storage admins. The company has also created a special bundle of SilverPeak software that is downloadable directly via the web and priced, the company says, at 50% less than comparable solutions.
Velocity leverages Silver Peak’s Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) software and simple storage forwarding to make replication acceleration easy and affordable for the storage administrator, resulting in turn in reduced ongoing disaster recovery costs by avoiding infrastructure upgrades, and helping companies of all sizes minimize risk by replicating more data in less time. According to the company, deployment of Silver Peak Velocity can be done in less than 20 minutes and can be accomplished from the storage administrator’s domain, with no network configuration changes required. Administrators download and install SilverPeak software in the data center and DR sites, point the storage filers to SilverPeak, and can quickly start accelerating replication traffic without changing the network or interrupting current replication.
Currently available for NetApp SnapMirror storage deployments, Silver Peak Velocity will be available for Dell, EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, and other mid-range replication products before the end of the year, says Cormier. Additional specially-priced bundles for Dell EqualLogic replication are available exclusively through Dell and authorized Dell resellers.
