STORServer, a provider of data backup solutions for the mid-market, announced four major product upgrades to its line of data backup appliances. The company has introduced a new BA Series Backup Appliance; updated the Enterprise Backup Appliance (EBA) line; enhanced pricing on Instant Restore (IR) Appliances; and is offering stand-alone sales of STORServer Console (SSC). As a result, the company, which sells exclusively through a reseller channel, says it now offers a backup appliance for every budget and environment.
A key enhancement to the product line is the introduction of a new entry-level BA Series Backup Appliance for office or data center customers with 1TB to 7TB of data to backup, per backup appliance, John Pearring, manager of sales and marketing at StorServer, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The offering is aimed at customers who are searching for a cost-effective, fully automated and one-price solution.
According to StorServer, the BA series backup appliance is a compact, integrated solution for backup and archive that supports multiple disaster recovery options and comes with pricing that is competitive with other similarly sized backup solutions. The BA appliance includes a 15TB disk-based storage pool driven by a six-core processor server with 32GB of memory, to keep pace with demanding data deduplication and virtual machine backup requirements.
The new entry-level BA 851 model is offered at a commodity price point that represents "a lower margin to ourselves and our resellers because it sells pretty quickly," says Pearring. It is also pre-manufactured rather than the company's build-to-suit approach. "We also beefed it up with extremely competitive hardware," and this appliance uses the Tivoli Storage Manager Base license, he explains. "It is still a beast of a box," he notes.
In addition, streamlined servers, new technology and functionality with larger storage choices are part of a complete update of STORServer's flagship appliance for enterprise operations - Enterprise Backup Appliances (EBA). EBA is an integrated backup, archive and disaster recovery solution that supports the entire enterprise, the vendor says, targeted for organizations requiring less than 10 terabytes up to 1PB of data storage.
StorServer also announced enhanced pricing on Instant Restore (IR) Appliances. Based on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack, STORServer says its IR Appliance now fits into any Windows or Linux environment as one of the least expensive and easiest to learn and manage appliance in the marketplace. The IR Appliance is aimed at solving backup and disaster recovery for the small data center and remote or branch operations in the largest enterprises. The IR Appliance technology maps blocks to files and application data, making it possible to restore quickly from a single snapshot. It integrates with all network connections (NAS, SAN, LAN and WAN) and hundreds of storage devices, StorServer says.
The StorServer Console (SSC) is now available as a stand-alone console for all IBM Tivoli Storage Manager installations, the vendor also announced. The software enables users to configure and manage Tivoli Storage Manager environments within a single user interface. Monitoring and reporting features keep users apprised of server activities in real-time with alerts available for a variety of storage conditions.
