Rocket U2 has announced that U2 Web Development Environment (U2 Web DE) V5.0.3 has been released, and is available for the minimum database levels of UD 7.2 and UV 10.3. U2 Web DE was re-architected at V5.0 to take advantage of native UO connectivity and Connection Pooling, bringing new functionality to U2 developers who want to create web applications or extend existing U2 Web DE applications to new markets.
New architecture, new capabilities and markets
The new architecture allows users to take advantage of additional database functionality such as 7x24 support for pausing the database to allow a snapshot for backups, automatic data encryption and SSL to secure the environment and data, and full foreign language support using UniVerse National Language Support (NLS) and UniData I18N, allowing a web application to run in languages other than English (e.g., simplified Chinese).
Improved deployment and enablement
In this release, U2 Web DE V5.0 Eclipse tooling has been expanded to make it easier to deploy and use U2 Web DE with U2 applications. U2 Web DE V5.0 offers the ability to deploy all back-end components through an Eclipse client, enable accounts to use U2 Web DE with a single click and build RedBack Objects (RBOs) without additional coding. Once created, these RBOs contain standard methods that can be used to handle common database functionality, such as read, write and delete methods or changed to use your own routines to handle web transactions.
Improved development capabilities
Visual Studio users can now take advantage of RBOs as native data sources allowing all RBOs methods and properties to be directly managed within Visual Studio, this allows MultiValue developers and Visual Studio developers to co-exist peacefully and focus on their own skills, thus improving productivity
Personal Edition
U2 Web DE V5.0 is also available as a Personal Edition and can be freely used together with the Personal Edition of the databases. Personal Editions are available on the Rocket U2 Downloads page.
Rocket Offers On-Demand Webcast on Guidance Dictionary Clean-up
Separately, Rocket U2 also announced that it is making a new webcast available on demand. Presented by Joan Dunn, U2 senior education consultant, the webcast provides guidance on the best approach to dictionary clean-up and the benefits it provides. According to Rocket, users that want to use third-party relational tools to connect to U2 or want to get the most out of Rocket's products like U2 DataVu, U2 Web Services Developer or the new U2 RESTful Web Services, will benefit from well-defined dictionaries.
