Rocket Software, a global software development firm, has released UniData 8.1, which represents the largest release in terms of number of enhanced features in 10 years to the MultiValue database management system.
A key improvement with the new release is the new 64-bit support. The 64-bit architecture and file support will now allow for better efficiency and reliability than the 32-bit architecture and file support. “We see it as is a reliability improvement. We had tried to stay in both worlds, keeping people happy in the 32-bit environment, but we finally decided that almost everybody has moved their OS to 64-bit so we’re going to take full advantage of that,” stated John Zagnoli, Rocket U2 development and engineering manager. As a result, UniData 8.1 is now able to handle larger data processes due to larger amounts of memory. “We see it as much as an increase in performance and reliability as being able to access more data,” said Zagnoli.
As the Internet of Things continues to expand, organizations are also more concerned with having the ability to support the latest version of the internet protocol IPv6. “As more and more devices become instrumented in the need to talk to each other, they’re all using IPv6, so we’ve outfitted UniData 8.1 to completely support IPv6,” said Vinnie Smith, managing director for R&D, Rocket U2. “But we’ll continue to support IPv4 so it’s a dual approach.” This will allow for flexibility among users who are not yet ready for IPv6.
And, because security has never been a more important topic than it is now in the technology space, the new release adds enhancements in that area as well. “We have added security by coming out with key index encryption which will not only protect data in flight but data at rest as well,” said John Nunziato, product manager, Rocket MultiValue Databases. Version 8.1 also supports the concept of least privilege, which experts consider to be one of the best methods for data security in the industry today. “We can have individual keys for groups of users which only decrypt the data that their keys will allow,” Zagnoli noted.
