Rapid direct connections to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) are now available to help Internet2 member institutions make a move to the cloud.
Through an Internet2 Cloud Connect dedicated network connection, institutions can utilize their existing Internet2 connections to extend their data center to OCI in a matter of days for no additional fee from Internet2 for up to 5Gbps.
This makes it easy for organizations to access and use cloud resources to support research, collaboration, and the academic enterprise without significant new investments.
“Government research agencies and higher education institutions are key drivers of societal innovations and scientific discoveries. To carry out their work, these organizations have substantial computing needs,” said Pat Mungovan, senior vice president, North America government and education, Oracle. “Leveraging Cloud Connect, Internet2 members can quickly get workloads up-and-running on OCI to reduce network costs, increase bandwidth, leverage multi-cloud and the Oracle/Azure interconnect, and equip their critical research programs with consistent and high-performing cloud resources.”
Internet2 Cloud Connect interfaces with OCI FastConnect to help organizations establish a private, direct connection between OCI and their data center, office, or co-location facility. FastConnect provides an easy, elastic, and affordable way to create a dedicated private network connection with higher bandwidth, lower latency, and smoother performance than public internet-based connections.
This is beneficial when organizations want to use cloud as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). For example, a university can move systems running on hardware in an onsite data center to operate in a cloud environment, or instantly provide compute and storage capability in the cloud to support university research programs.
Internet2 currently serves thousands of organizations, including US colleges and universities, research institutions, government agencies, corporations, community anchor institutions, and regional and state education networks. Internet2 Cloud Connect is available to research and education institutions connected to the Internet2 network directly or through a regional or state network.
“Oracle for Research is thrilled that Cloud Connect provides researchers and educators with a faster direct connection to purpose-built research products like Oracle Open Data,” said Alison Derbenwick Miller, vice president, Oracle for Research. “With OCI now available through Internet2 Cloud Connect, researchers across disciplines have faster access to Oracle’s entire portfolio of world-class cloud services, including OCI Language, Speech, and Vision and other OCI Data Science solutions.”
