Progress Software Announces “Preview Program” of DataDirect ODBC Driver for Hadoop

Progress Software is offering a limited-availability preview program of its new driver for Hadoop, a fully-compliant ODBC driver supporting multiple Hadoop distributions out-of-the-box. According to Progress, the new DataDirect Connect for ODBC driver for Hadoop will deliver the same efficiency that its existing data connectivity portfolio already provides to more than 300 OEM partners and hundreds of thousands of users.

The DataDirect Connect for ODBC driver for Hadoop is expected to ship at the end of October 2012, with preview access available for a limited number of participants beginning in September.

OEMs are now increasingly being asked  by their customers to provide Hadoop access, Michael Benedict, vice president and business line manager for Progress DataDirect, tells 5 Minute Briefing.  In turn, Benedict says, those OEMs are asking Progress to help them connect to Hadoop because they want a solution that follows their normal code paths.

For ISVs and OEMs, this connectivity now means that they can have one driver, with DataDirect quality and features to enable their applications to connect to most major distributions of Hadoop. The DataDirect for Connect ODBC driver for Hadoop will offer support for popular Hadoop distribution frameworks, including Apache, Cloudera, MapR, and Amazon EMR. It will also provide Windows, Red Hat, Solaris, SUSE, AIX, and HP-UX platform support.

Progress is providing support for the initial four distributions of Hadoop because those are the ones for which it received the most requests. “I expect over time that our list of Hadoop distributions will grow as more requests come in on the heels of this preview and release,” Benedict notes. “For example, Hortonworks is one that we certainly hear about.”
