Pivotal Big Data Suite to Include New Application Services
Pivotal Big Data Suite will also include new data services, including Pivotal Big Data Suite on Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Spring XD, providing a scalable open source distributed framework for data ingestion, batch processing and analytic pipeline management, Redis, offering a scalable open source key-value store and data structure serve, and RabbitMQ, an open source message queue for applications.
Open Data Platform Formed to Increase Enterprise Adoption of Hadoop
With the creation of theOpen Data Platform, Pivotal and other founding vendors say they plan to concentrate their efforts first on developing and using offerings focused on core Apache Hadoop use cases. The Open Data Platform will provide access to a tested reference core which will simplify upstream and downstream qualification efforts - giving the industry a “test once, use everywhere” core platform. Founding members will particularly focus on core components of the Hadoop ecosystem – HDFS, MapReduce, YARN, and Ambari - with more to follow.
A key benefit of the ODP will be for members to collaborate across various Apache projects as well as other open source-licensed big data projects with a goal toward meeting enterprise class requirements. The ODP is expected to promote a set of standard open source technologies and versions that will increase compatibility among big data solutions and simplify the process for applications and tools to integrate with and run on any compliant system.
Despite plans to release the code base of the Pivotal products to open source communities, Cucchi stressed, “We are not giving up development on these products. We will continue to aggressively develop on them. Our developers will essentially become committers to these projects and we will be busy at work developing a strong community around each one.”
“The best way to accelerate innovation and adoption of platform technologies like Hadoop is through an open source model," said Shaun Connolly, vice president of corporate strategy, Hortonworks. "The Open Data Platform initiative will rally both enterprise end users and vendors around a well-defined common core platform against which big data solutions can be qualified. This will free up the broader big data ecosystem to focus on data-driven applications that deliver proactive insights for businesses.”
ODP Platinum-Level Founding Members Pivotal and Hortonworks Strike New Partnership
Coming on the heels of the newly announced Open Data Platform Initiative, Platinum level founding members Pivotal and Hortonworks, also formed a strategic and commercial partnership that they say aligns both companies around a consistent core of Apache Hadoop-based capabilities including product integrations, joint engineering and production support. The strategic partnership marries Pivotal’s SQL on Hadoop, analytical database and NoSQL in-memory technologies, with Hortonworks’ expertise and support for Hadoop.
The Pivotal/Hortonworks strategic partnership includes alignment of the engineering teams to accelerate the enterprise capabilities of Apache Hadoop with Pivotal technologies including Pivotal HAWQ and GemFire. In addition, Pivotal and Hortonworks intend to provide all available advanced services in the Big Data Suite on the Hortonworks Data Platform. Beginning with the SQL on Hadoop solution, HAWQ, this delivers SQL on Hadoop to Hortonworks customers for advanced analytics. “Last year, if you wanted to leverage HAWQ which is broadly accepted as the most advanced SQL on Hadoop, you had to do it with Pivotal HD, and we basically wanted to reduce the lock in for customers,” said Cucchi. Hortonworks will also provide escalation level support for Pivotal HD 3.0, Pivotal’s Hadoop Distribution.
