Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo Expands in 2013

For the second year, Percona, a provider of professional services for MySQL, will host the Percona Live MySQL Conference and Expo. This year’s conference will take place April 22 to April 25 at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara & The Santa Clara Convention Center. This year's conference will be a day longer, and include more speakers and more high-level sponsors than last year, Terry Erisman, chief marketing officer, Percona, tells 5 Minute Briefing.

Percona provides MySQL support, consulting, training, remote DBA, and server development services to companies. The company was founded in 2006 by former MySQLAB employees Peter Zaitsev and Vadim Tkachenko, who are also among the authors of High Performance MySQL. In addition to percona.com, its corporate website, the company supports mysqlperformanceblog.com, a website that focuses on the technical aspects of MySQL. Percona also develops software for MySQL users, including Percona Server, which it describes as an “enhanced drop-in replacement”for MySQL, Percona XtraBackup, Percona XtraDB Cluster, and Percona Toolkit.

“Last year was our first year doing the conference and I think it turned out very well,” says Erisman.  “We had over 1,000 people there. Now, we are looking to build on the momentum from last year. We are looking for more attendees, and we expect to well exceed 1,000 attendees. HP is back as a diamond sponsor this year and we have added Amazon Web Services and Continuent as diamond-level sponsors as well.”

In addition, the conference has been expanded this year, Erisman notes. “Last year, we had one day of tutorials and two days of break-out sessions and this year we have expanded the break-out sessions by 50% so we have one day of tutorials just as we did last year, and three days of break-out sessions.”

The conference will have more than break-out sessions and more than 90 different speakers over the four days. This year, a speaker from Oracle – Tomas Ulin, vice president of MySQL Engineering – will speak on the morning of Tuesday, April 23.

“It is great that he will be there and he plans to talk about driving MySQL innovation,” Erisman says. “Of course, MySQL 5.6 also launched recently so that is big news and having him there to talk about it is a big boost. We also have Matt Aslett this year from 451 Research who will give a keynote talk on the state of the MySQL world.”

Because Percona was just launching its conference last year, there was a bit of a wait and see attitude, says Erisman. “That is gone this time. Our ticket sales are significantly ahead of where we were last year at this same time so it seems like the energy is there. We have a great line-up of presentations and this news about Oracle is good for everybody who is in the MySQL community.”
