To simplify hardware management in traditional, virtualized and cloud-based data center environments, Oracle last week unveiled Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Ops Center.
With the announcement of Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Ops Center, there are two main areas of focus, says Steve Wilson, vice president of Systems Management, Oracle. One is the broadening of the types of assets being covered through Ops Center, and the other is the deep integration of Ops Center in the Oracle ecosystem, integrating it in with the rest of the Enterprise Manager Suite as well as integrating it in with the Oracle support systems, Wilson explains.
Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Ops Center includes new hardware management capabilities for the engineered systems Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, as well as Oracle's Sun ZFS Storage Appliance product line and Oracle's network fabric.
With the new approach, according to Oracle, customers benefit from integrated infrastructure management across physical and virtual environments, Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux operating systems, Oracle's Sun SPARC and x86 servers including firmware, clusters, Sun storage and Oracle's network fabric. These deep management solutions for Oracle's Sun systems can reduce operating costs and maximize the value of Oracle hardware investments.
Additionally, integrated application-to-disk management helps customers quickly identify and resolve problems across the stack by providing deep hardware management information and control to enable integrated application-to-disk fault management.
Providing integrated lifecycle management, the new release offers complete provisioning and patch automation for Oracle physical and virtual servers by introducing new end-to-end automated deployment plans. To help IT teams deliver on business-level objectives, this release includes new data center dashboards, energy performance management capabilities, and comprehensive compliance reports.
New integration with My Oracle Support also enables a combination of proactive notifications and fixes plus peer-to-peer knowledge sharing that enables contract/entitlement validation, automated service requests, and service request tracking, all through Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Ops Center.
While Oracle Enterprise Manager has historically had the tools for managing databases, middleware and up into applications, Ops Center was originally the suite of tools that came with the Sun acquisition, for managing servers, operating systems and virtual machines, Wilson observes. The new release of Ops Center, with its expanded coverage of assets and the deep integration of Ops Center in the Oracle ecosystem, represents a "significant advancement" in Oracle's integrated application-to-disk management approach, he notes.
