Integration platform as a service (iPaaS), a method for solving software sprawl, is a key enabler in successfully modernizing large-scale applications, especially on enterprises’ journeys towards AI and generative AI (GenAI) adoption. Despite this, enterprises are left with a daunting question: Where—and how—do you begin?
Informatica experts joined DBTA’s latest webinar, Drive Seamless App Modernization & AI Integration with iPaaS, to uncover crucial strategies for large-scale app modernization initiatives, examining digital transformation’s various nuances.
Setting the context for the conversation, Shashwat Mahaseth, senior principal product marketing manager, Informatica, highlighted a sobering statistic: According to a report from Synchrony Systems, 75% of app modernization initiatives fail.
“That is an astonishing number,” said Mahaseth. “The money is there, the intent is there, but still, 3 out 4 app modernizations fail to deliver. What can be behind it?”
At its core, while organizations need modern applications ecosystems to deliver seamless digital experiences, the complexity of legacy apps creates a detrimental gap. According to a live poll conducted during the webinar, a majority of viewers agree, where 61% reported that legacy systems with complex dependencies are the biggest challenges facing app modernization. This was followed by data migration and integration issues (50%), skill gaps and resource constraints (44%), and balancing innovation with security and compliance (27%).
The complexities of legacy solutions in the enterprise are further complicated by a fragmented landscape of applications, data, and skills—each damaging obstacles preventing modernization.
According to Amar Srivastava, global practice leader, Informatica, “iPaaS is your digital transformation backbone,” capable of “strengthening data exchange and systematic collaboration.” While each enterprises’ digital transformations may differ, tying everything together with iPaaS and comprehensive data exchange is crucial.
“Data should be there when and where it is needed in whatever format by the business,” added Srivastava.
As important as iPaaS is, so is developing a thorough app modernization strategy. There is no silver bullet solution, noted Srivastava, but there are a litany of approaches and tools for supporting transformation.
Importantly, “you cannot do it [modernization] overnight,” Srivastava cautioned. “Modernization is an ongoing process…we have to do it in a phased manner” as defined by the organization and its transformation goals.
Ultimately, iPaaS “is not just about moving from point A to B…you need to be very holistic and strategic,” said Srivastava.
Srivastava then introduced Informatica’s Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC), a platform capable of supporting the complexities of app modernization while centering operational efficiency, agility, and innovation. It enables:
- Comprehensive data integration across on-prem and cloud sources
- API connectivity and pre-built connectors between disparate apps to automate workflows across systems
- Data governance and quality that ensures high data integrity and compliance with regulatory standards
- Automation and orchestration of complex business processes with end-to-end automation of business activities
- The use of AI to streamline workflows with automation for efficiency, real-time decisions, and agility
