At the O’Reilly Strata Conference, MapR, a provider of Apache Hadoop technology for big data deployments, announced the release of its latest version of MapR Distribution which includes Apache Hadoop 2.2 with YARN and the release of MapR Sandbox for Hadoop.
“We are very excited about what Hadoop YARN brings to the different types of applications that companies want to run on the Hadoop platform,” said Steve Wooledge, vice president of product marketing, MapR.
According to MapR, YARN delivers advanced resource management and with the use of a MapR cluster this new system can both utilize real time data while maintaining the flexibility to efficiently manage resources. MapR’s read/write POSIX data platform combined with YARN enables YARN-based applications to not only run on a Hadoop cluster and share compute resources, but also read, write and update data in the underlying distributed file system and database tables. “We are very excited about what Hadoop YARN brings to the different types of applications that companies want to run on the Hadoop platform,” said Steve Wooledge, vice president of product marketing, MapR.
The MapR Distribution including Apache Hadoop YARN will be available in March.
MapR also introduced its free Sandbox for Hadoop to help organizations close the Hadoop skills gap and allow more user to quickly learn how to develop and administer Hadoop applications. MapR Sandbox is a virtual machine image which contains the latest MapR M7 release and offers point and click tutorials for developers, analysts, and administrators. “The idea is that we want to really help educate the market on writing their first Hadoop application and we think this is the fastest way for developers and administrators both to have their first Hadoop experience and write their first application,” Wooledge said.
Wooledge noted what differentiates MapR’s offering is the standard space NFS system that allows users to point and click, drag and drop, and bring data into their sandbox environment without having to write any code or use any special utilities.
Separately at the Strata conference, MapR also announced the early access release of the HP Vertica Analytics Platform on MapR. The SQL-on-Hadoop solution integrates HP Vertica’s high-performance analytic platform directly on MapR’s distribution for Hadoop. It provides 100% ANSI SQL-compliance, with advanced interactive analytic capabilities, and deep business intelligence (BI) and ETL tool support to improve analyst productivity through expanded exploration of semi-structured data as well as traditional structured data.
