Lacework, the data-driven security company, is debuting Lacework Edge, a new proxy-based, cloud-native security service edge (SSE) solution designed to secure users and networks at the edge. Expanding the Lacework platform’s visibility and behavioral analysis to the edge, this latest solution aims to ease risk management at the edge with sophisticated—yet explainable—technology.
Traditional VPNs, network security appliances, and point products drive complexity at the edge, where enterprises that have stitched together various pieces of technology to address the edge environment are left with an incohesive, poorly aligned amalgamation of solutions, according to Trevor Welsh, VP of product, Lacework Edge SSE.
Lacework Edge addresses these challenges by offering a single, consolidated interface solution that provides end-to-end, zero-trust connectivity for making risk-based access decisions. Securing access from any user device to internet applications, private data center applications, and SaaS applications while also securing their data, Lacework Edge lowers the barrier of entry in leveraging advanced risk-based data management at the edge.
“Risk ends up really going into two columns. One column is, it ends up being a report or just a word that gets thrown about, and it doesn't really do anything. The other side of risk, which is very clandestine, is all modeling and weird stuff, and nobody really understands it. It's just this black box that stuff goes into and then stuff comes out of, and it's hard to figure out how good or how bad it is,” explained Welsh.
This is why “explainable risk is something that Edge took really seriously. And I felt that that was a big differentiator with regards to risk-based [security],” Welsh continued.
Lacework Edge takes a proactive approach to security, mitigating attacks early on in its life cycles. The solution calculates risk and behavior analytics in real time, tracking assets to contextualize access decisions, reduce tickets, and offer greater enterprise protection at the edge. In addition to in-depth visibility and explainability, Lacework Edge benefits from being built on the highly scalable and reliable global networks of cloud service providers, such as AWS and Google Cloud.
With the prevalence of generative AI (GenAI), certain attacks—such as those originating from phishing and compromised employee endpoints such as laptops—necessitate zero-trust based SSE solutions like Lacework Edge to ensure true protection, according to the company.
“We set out to build Lacework as a modern, data-driven, AI-based platform that can constantly adapt to take on security’s greatest challenges,” said Vikram Kapoor, CTO of Lacework. “Lacework Edge is the newest launch on a platform designed to keep businesses moving fast by holistically securing their environments from edge to cloud.”
Lacework Edge also enables the following capabilities:
- Automated inline workflows and advanced risk analysis for edge computing use cases
- Seamless integration with Lacework’s core platform
- Streamlined investigations through the ability to conduct full root cause analysis (RCA)
- Built with a robust architecture rooted in zero-trust principles
- Eliminates inherent network trust and reduces risk
- Comprehensive control over data, devices, and posture
Lacework Edge targets risk-based access at the edge, ultimately helping to drive ROI through improved security, performance, and user experience.
“Before adopting Edge, we used a leading SSE vendor for zero-trust cloud security and large file transfers. With Edge, we’ve improved our file transfer performance by 20X, from roughly 900 kilobytes per second, to about 20 megabytes per second,” said Scott DeVita-Carlow, head of IT infrastructure at Velo 3D.
