The value of the Internet of Things is being realized across a variety of industries. IoT has the potential to transform how and when decisions are made throughout business and daily life.
In fact, a recent survey found that 29% of Database Trends and Applications readers currently have IoT initiatives underway.
The top reasons for implementing IoT projects include increasing new business revenue sources, increasing customer and product knowledge, and reducing operating expenses. However, unlocking the power of IoT requires overcoming tough challenges.
DBTA recently held a webinar featuring Vijay Raja, solutions marketing lead, IoT, Cloudera, Alexander Rubin, principal architect, Percona, and Thomas Dong, VP product & solutions Marketing, Couchbase who discussed emerging best practices and key technology solutions in the IoT space.
IoT data comes from a variety of different sources, according to Raja. This includes:
- Massive volumes of intermittent data streams
- Generated from a variety of data sources
- Predominantly time-series
- Can come in streams (real-time) or batches
- Diverse data structures and schemas
- Some of it may be perishable
The Cloudera platform can help with this, Raja said. Cloudera offers data storage, data processing, machine learning, and real-time analytics.
According to Rubin, MySQL is also an option when it comes to storing and making sense of IoT information.
Dong approached IoT from another standpoint, as requiring full-stack data management for interactive platforms and apps.
The business requirements for full-stack include:
- Offline-first architecture
- Local database to manage IoT data at the edge
- Sync solution to securely move data from edge to cloud
- Backend database to store, query, and analyze IoT data
- Built-in integrations with big data technologies
Couchbase’s platform offers these solutions, Dong said.
Couchbase Lite offers a lightweight embedded NoSQL database with full CRUD, query, indexing, FTS, and eventing functionality.
Sync Gateway offers a secure web gateway with synchronization, data access, and data integration APIs for accessing, integrating, and synchronizing data over the web.
And Couchbase Server is a Lightweight embedded NoSQL database with full CRUD, query, indexing, FTS, and eventing functionality. It offers a secure web gateway with synchronization, data access, and data integration APIs for accessing, integrating, and synchronizing data over the web. It is a highly scalable, highly available, high performance NoSQL database server.
