CommVault is shipping an integrated cloud storage connector for its Simpana software platform designed to enable customers to move on-premises backup and archive data into, and out of, private and public cloud storage without complex scripting or the addition of disparate cloud gateway appliances. With the addition of this new connector, the Simpana software can treat cloud storage providers as simply another target storage destination, along with on-site disk, VTL, and optical devices.
The upgraded Simpana platform provides enterprises with a single platform to simplify the movement, protection, deduplication, archiving, and e-discovery of all types of data, including Oracle and SAP databases, Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint systems, and virtualized data, the vendor says. With Simpana, customers can deploy embedded data deduplication and encryption modules. To help meet compliance and e-discovery needs, CommVault says its customers can also add Simpana Search to index data prior to performing e-discovery analysis.
With the new cloud connector, all of these capabilities can now be extended to cloud storage architectures. Simpana now integrates with cloud storage providers including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Nirvanix, and CommVault also says it plans to integrate these capabilities with EMC and Iron Mountain.

Some customers are moving data storage to the cloud to replace tape backups, to archive data for compliance purposes, or to move lesser used files in order to free up primary disk space."
New and existing Simpana software customers can leverage cloud-based Farline data storage with Amazon, Microsoft and Nirvanix immediately by simply purchasing a per-terabyte capacity license from CommVault that enables them to store data on-premises or in the cloud. Customers will need to have an established account with one of the cloud providers of choice. Customers also will be able to take advantage of the cloud connector to utilize cloud storage services from EMC and Iron Mountain at a future date. Simpana software capacity-based licensing lets customers grow their cloud storage infrastructure as their data needs increase.
