Collibra, a provider of data governance software solutions for business users, has introduced Collibra Catalog, as part of Collibra 5.0, the latest release of its on premises and cloud data governance solution.
Companies are amassing more data than ever, creating challenges for IT teams and the business side. Governance is becoming increasingly critical in order to be able to derive insights that are accurate. However, too few organizations manage data through a “system of record” the way other critical enterprise functions such as sales, HR, or finance are managed, said Felix Van de Maele, co-founder and CEO of Collibra, which was spun off from STARLab at the University of Brussels in 2008.
Collibra, he said, serves as that system of record, providing a data governance foundation that helps organizations increase the value of their data and eliminate data silos. In particular, the new Collibra Catalog helps eliminate one of the major pain points with which data scientists and business analysts struggle – the time-intensive process of finding data – and enables them to work more quickly and strategically to solve critical business challenges.
The goal with Collibra 5.0 is to take a more “consumerized” approach to data governance technology that enables business users to “shop” for and find data in much the same way as they shop for products in their everyday lives on consumer sites like Amazon.
The role of data governance is escalating with the rise of big data. In order for data to be of benefit in a data lake for example, it has to be trustworthy, although it is also possible that there can be different levels of certification for different purposes, noted Stan Christiaens, CTO.
In particular, the new release also makes it easier for business users to benefit from the data governance software without training, he said.
As part of Collibra 5.0, the new Collibra Catalog helps the business data analyst to discover, describe, assemble, and govern datasets to improve trust in analytics based on those data sets. It serves as a single source of intelligence for data experts and other data citizens across the organization who need quick access to enterprise data, and provides semantic search features to find, use, and enrich data assets for a more immediate business impact, and spend less time data wrangling. It allows data citizens to use existing data in different ways, driving insight through collaboration and crowdsourcing to increase the value of existing data assets and eliminating data silos.
According to the company, the Collibra Catalog goes beyond structural and usage metadata and combines an easy “data shopping” experience with the meaning, lineage, and relationships of data, and also uses machine learning functionality to provide increasingly relevant data to users over time.
As part of the new platform release, Collibra 5.0 offers new ease-of-use, performance and flexibility benefits, including a more responsive and intuitive user interface that improves navigation, an open API that enables Collibra customers and partners to extend existing data governance capabilities or create new ones using the platform, as well as a management console integrated within the Collibra Data Governance platform that simplifies data “housekeeping chores” and enables the management of an enterprise data governance system.
Collibra 5.0 is also available for mobile users on iOS and Windows devices.
