BMC Software announced the availability of the latest release of the BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping solution, which adds collaborative application mapping. According to BMC, application discovery and the mapping of dependencies is critical for succeeding with strategic IT initiatives such as IT service management, data center automation and transformation, cloud computing and virtualization management, service impact management and service costing. With this new capability, BMC aims to help reduce the time, effort and cost of mapping multi-tier applications to the IT infrastructure supporting them, enabling IT to better understand how applications and infrastructure work together to deliver the services that enterprises depend on.
"IT operations wants to connect applications with the infrastructure supporting them, but current tools make this work too difficult and time-consuming," Bill Emmett, senior manager of solutions marketing for BMC Software, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "With BMC's new release of ADDM 8.3, we are introducing collaborative application mapping, a new and innovative feature that tackles this challenge head-on. Collaborative application mapping reduces the time commitment and information needed from application owners, eliminates the need for complex programming, and automates the process of keeping application maps up to date in dynamic IT environments." By using BMC's ADDM solution, says Emmett, customers have been able to reduce the time and resources for creating application maps by 60-80%.
According to BMC, IT has previously been dependent on the owners of business applications to provide large amounts of detailed data about applications. But, with this new collaborative application mapping capability, application owners can now provide a small amount of basic information, such as the application type and host names, and, with this data, IT can use the BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping solution's search and query-building capabilities to create a dynamic application map, which is automatically updated and maintained whenever there are changes in the IT environment.
