BMC Software, an enterprise systems management tools provider, announced a new solution designed to help reduce the need for multiple mainframe subsystems. The new software, BMC Subsystem Optimizer for zEnterprise, removes the traditional requirement that DB2, IMS and CICS subsystems must reside on the same logical partition (LPAR) to communicate and process workloads, the vendor said. Overcoming this requirement translates to “significant” mainframe monthly license costs (MLC) savings of up to 20% or more, the vendor said.
This approach has not been available to mainframe shops previously, said Bill Miller, president of zSolutions and select technologies for BMC Software. “Subsystem Optimizer, combined with the other new products we’ve introduced in the last year, offers customers a fast path to lowered mainframe costs, reduced risk and increased staff productivity.”
Many mainframe shops are charged for subsystems based on the usage of all subsystems and work located on a partition. Therefore, subsystems that process less work and do not significantly contribute to the monthly peak are charged at much higher rates than their actual usage.
zEnterprise system customers can now reduce MLC charges by reconfiguring their subsystem placement across partitions, using the BMC Subsystem Optimizer software to re-direct work. The solution also provides new configuration options to help manage transaction processing requirements. Because many enterprises have multiple DB2, IMS or CICS subsystems – and the cost of subsystems increases 12-15 percent per release – the savings from subsystem optimization can add up quickly, the vendor said.
BMC Subsystem Optimizer for zEnterprise overcomes high MLC charges by enabling customers to redirect work to mainframe subsystems on different LPARs and central processing complexes – helping to reduce overall service unit consumption and monthly license costs.
BMC Subsystem Optimizer enables data requests to be re-directed for more efficient processing, without the need to modify applications. The software also helps reduce business risk by ensuring that calls to DB2 and IMS can always be delivered to a subsystem on other partitions.
