Attachmate Corporation announced Attachmate Reflection 2008, the next generation of its terminal emulation line, which includes support for leading virtualization technologies, greater security capabilities, and customization support built on Microsoft .NET Framework, Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and Web Services.
"In addition to our well known security capabilities around encryption, FIPS 140-2, DoD PKI, SSL and TLS, we have added ‘endpoint security features' such as privacy filters and trusted locations that really take the security of the entire conversation and business process to a new level," Michael Miller, director of product marketing and product management, Attachmate, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "Rather than simply securing and encrypting the data connection between the emulator and the mainframe system, we are providing additional capabilities that allow the entire business process that the end user is engaged in to be more secure."
Additionally, with support for leading application and desktop virtualization platforms, Reflection 2008 can be deployed via server or client-based virtualization technologies. "We have seen an enormous growth and interest in virtualization among our customers and it has evolved from the data center virtualization which has matured a lot. Now our customers are focusing on desktop and application virtualization which is where we come in with Reflection 2008," Miller notes. Partnerships with leading virtualization vendors include Microsoft, Citrix, VMware, and HP.
Another large area of focus for this release is on customization and automation. "Our integration with Office 2007 and our use of the Office Ribbon interface allows an enormous amount of customization as well as a familiar user environment for end users who are already familiar with Microsoft Office," says Miller. "In addition to that we have added a full VBA based scripting engine for macros so they no longer have to learn a proprietary macro language to get the most out of their emulation experience on the desktop. They can use the same macro language and scripting and automation language that they are using already in Excel or Word or other Microsoft Office product."
