Actuate Corporation, developers of the open source BIRT business intelligence environment, announced ActuateOne, a product suite for rapidly developing and deploying custom BI applications and information applications. ActuateOne, the vendor says, is based upon one design, one server and one user experience to improve developer productivity, optimize the end user experience within a unified environment, and deploy from on-premises to the cloud.
The foundation of ActuateOne is the open source BIRT design which is embraced by over 750,000 developers worldwide and the core of the Eclipse BIRT open source project. BIRT Designer is the common design environment that uses a web-based design metaphor for content creation and includes editors for metadata definition, query definition and execution.
"ActuateOne is our latest product delivering value-added features around BIRT," Nobby Akiha, senior vice president of marketing for Actuate, tells 5 Minute Briefing. The Eclipse BIRT project was first announced in 2004, and Actuate has been offering BIRT-based products since 2007. The vendor's vision for BI is to move away from disparate tools to a single suite of integrated capabilities, he says.
Applications based on ActuateOne deliver information from any data source, including high-volume print streams, and present it to end users for maximum productivity. The suite includes release 11 of Actuate's value-added products for the Eclipse BIRT open source project, including the latest version of BIRT iServer.
"ActuateOne is the branding term that encompasses all of Actuate's product lines including BIRT iServer," Akiha says. "BIRT iServer is Actuate's world class scalable server for deploying, managing and securing BIRT content, analytics and dashboards. Release 11 of BIRT iServer adds Elastic Clustering and flexible licensing for cost effective cloud deployment."
Release 11 of iServer adds scalability via Elastic Clustering to dynamically provision instances as needed as well as generating in-memory datasets from disparate enterprise data sources in support of the new dashboard and analytics features. These data sets, BIRT Data Objects, are defined in the BIRT design, further simplifying BI tasks and eliminating the need for multiple tools.
"Elastic Clustering maximizes the efficiency of hardware investments and application performance for deployments of custom business intelligence and information applications in on-premises, Software-as-a-Service and Platform-as-a-Service scenarios," Akiha says. "We're seeing interest in utilizing this feature for virtualized on premises and cloud environments, plus it makes testing applications a lower cost commitment. We expect to see momentum pick up in this area in the coming year as more companies take advantage of the promise of lower cost and flexibility in the cloud."
