IBM has announced plans to acquire Tealeaf Technology, Inc., a provider of customer experience analytics software that helps organizations react more quickly to consumer trends. With this agreement, IBM says it will support its Smarter Commerce initiative with the acquisition of qualitative analytics capabilities that provide CMOs, e-commerce, and customer service professionals with real-time and automated insights into customer buying experiences across online and mobile devices.

Google has announced that Google BigQuery, a web service that lets users do interactive analysis of massive data sets, is now available to the public. Billed as enabling customers to "analyze terabytes of data with just a click of a button," the company says the data is secured, replicated across data centers, and can be easily exported.

Teradata and Aprimo, a Teradata company that provides integrated marketing management software, have signed of a definitive agreement to acquire Munich-based eCircle, a European provider of cloud-based digital marketing software. According to Teradata, the addition of eCircle more than triples Aprimo's European team, expertise and reach in all major European countries, and enables the delivery of eCircle solutions globally. The transaction is expected to occur in the second quarter of 2012.

Organizations are struggling with big data, which they define as any large-size data store that becomes unmanageable by standard technologies or methods, according to a new survey of 264 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications. The survey was conducted by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., in partnership with MarkLogic in January 2012. Among the key findings uncovered by the survey is the fact that unstructured data is on the rise, and ready to engulf current data management systems. Added to that concern, say respondents, is their belief that management does not understand the challenge that is looming, and is failing to recognize the significance of unstructured data assets to the business.

10gen, the company behind MongoDB, has announced its support for MongoDB with Node.js. This includes an official Node.js driver as well as commercial support from 10gen for MongoDB-backed applications developed with Node.js. Node.js joins the existing set of programming languages and environments 10gen supports, including Java, PHP, C#, Ruby, Python, C++, C, Perl, Scala, Haskell and Erlang. Launched in 2009 and sponsored by Joyent, JavaScript-based Node.js is designed to help developers build data-intensive, real-time applications that support large numbers of concurrent users and devices.

IBM introduced a series of new Linux-based systems and solutions intended to help companies exploit the cost efficiency of Linux and virtualization for business-critical workloads. STORServer, a provider of data backup solutions for the mid-market, announced four major product upgrades to its line of data backup appliances. The company has introduced a new BA Series Backup Appliance; updated the Enterprise Backup Appliance (EBA) line; enhanced pricing on Instant Restore (IR) Appliances; and is offering stand-alone sales of STORServer Console (SSC). As a result, the company, which sells exclusively through a reseller channel, says it now offers a backup appliance for every budget and environment.

Progress Software Corporation announced a new strategic focus in which it will become a provider of a next-generation, context-aware application development and deployment platform in the cloud for the application platform-as-a-service (aPaaS) market, by beefing up investments in its core OpenEdge, DataDirect Connect, and Apama Analytics and Decisions products and integrating them into a single offering. As part of the plan, Progress says it will divest multiple product lines that are not core to the new vision and launch immediate operational restructuring initiatives to significantly reduce annual costs.

IBM announced an overall 7% jump in profitability in the first quarter of 2012 over the previous year, but hardware and server revenues lagged. The company's net income for the quarter was $3.1 billion, compared with $2.9 billion in the first quarter of 2011. Total revenues for the first quarter of 2012 of $24.7 billion were flat (up 1%, adjusting for currency) from the first quarter of 2011.

Quest Software has released version 11.5 of its Toad for Oracle software, the flagship product in the Toad portfolio of productivity software for database developers, DBAs, and analysts. Drawing on community feedback from their two million users, Quest has introduced a number of new features and improvements, most notably a new social intelligence component. Toad for Oracle 11.5, Quest contends, will allow users to take advantage of the best ideas and practices from the community and further increase user productivity.

EMC Corporation has announced new EMC Data Domain Boost (DD Boost) integration with Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN). DD Boost software provides advanced integration between EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems and applications for faster, more efficient backup and recovery. The DD Boost software distributes part of the deduplication process to the Oracle database server and enables RMAN to directly manage Data Domain replication. SAP unveiled its roadmap for the database and mobile markets. At a press conference in San Francisco that was also made available online, Dr. Vishal Sikka, a member of the SAP executive Board, Technology & Innovation, said the company's vision for the SAP real-time data platform includes the SAP HANA platform, Sybase data management offerings, and SAP solutions for enterprise information management (EIM). "In our minds, and in our customers' minds there is now absolutely no doubt that HANA represents the database architecture for the future, for OLTP and OLAP, for analyzing structured and unstructured data, for legacy applications and for new applications," Sikka told the audience.

In a move intended to drive innovation in mobile solutions, SAP announced plans to acquire Syclo, a provider of enterprise mobile applications and technologies. The addition of Syclo's expertise in building and selling mobile solutions in industries such as utilities, oil & gas, life sciences and manufacturing is expected to enhance SAP mobile solutions. It is also expected to help accelerate the adoption and deployment of new mobile asset management and field service solutions on the Sybase Unwired Platform, part of the SAP mobile platform and the company's infrastructure for developing and managing mobile apps.

Sybase has announced that Ford Motor Company will centralize all of its logical and physical modeling functions with SAP Sybase PowerDesigner, the data modeling software and metadata management solution for data, information, and enterprise architectures. OpenInsight Development Suite (OI) 9.3.1 is now available from Revelation Software.The new release includes OpenInsight for Web (O4W v1.3) which provides additional integration with the new Banded Report Writer, support routines for RSS feeds, and a new ad hoc report builder, along with additional mobile enhancements such as mobile-specific menu and report output. The software is intended to simplify tape management by eliminating manual intervention and help improve operational efficiency. Pitney Bowes Software, a provider of customer data, analytics and communications management solutions, has released Portrait Explorer, a solution to enable business users deploy big data analytics. The tool organizes otherwise complex customer data stores into an intuitive library of "customer cards" that the company claims is as easy to navigate and operate as one's digital photo album. OpDemand, a provider of solutions for agile IT operations, announced it is shipping a cloud infrastructure management platform, designed to enable software development teams to leverage raw cloud infrastructure without being overwhelmed by technical complexity. "I think there is still a false assumption that mission-critical apps must be kept on-premise. While it's true that certain issues like security compliance and I/O performance may necessitate on-premise deployments, by and large you're going to see higher availability utilizing a cloud provider like Amazon who boasts eight geographic regions with dozens of isolated data centers. Red Hat announced the beta availability of Red Hat Storage 2.0, based on new capabilities that build upon the company's support for unstructured data storage. Dell has acquired Clerity Solutions, a provider of applications modernization and re-hosting solutions and services. Clerity's capabilities will enable Dell Services to help customers reduce the cost of transitioning business-critical applications and data from legacy computing systems and onto more modern architectures, including the cloud. IBM today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Varicent Software, a provider of analytics software for compensation and sales performance management. Varicent is a privately held company, with headquarters in Toronto, Canada. Financial terms of the acquisition, which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2012, were not disclosed. "Varicent expands IBM's analytics portfolio into the sales function of organizations," Paul Hill, vice president, Performance Management, Business Analytics, IBM, tells 5 Minute Briefing. "It is a line-of-business play."
