LinuxCon North America 2011 took place last month in Vancouver, Canada. IBM, a platinum sponsor of the event, offered several presentations and break-out sessions.
In a keynote presentation, Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger, chairman emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology, presented "Linux: A Disruptive Force - Then and Now." Dr. Wladawsky-Berger, who was responsible for identifying emerging technologies and marketplace developments critical to the future of the IT industry while at IBM, drew upon more than 40 years of experience to provide a unique perspective on Linux and the evolution of IT.
Jean Staten Healy, director of Cross-IBM Linux and Open Virtualization, IBM Systems & Technology Group, Systems Software, also moderated a panel discussion titled, "Linux beyond x86: Revolutionizing the Data Center with Linux at the Core," in which enterprise clients shared how they are benefiting from implementing IT solutions on non-x86 systems with Linux at the core. Panelists included Dr. B. Kim Andrews, manager of Research Computing, Rice University; John Craig, manager, Technical Services CoE for zSeries, TELUS; Nigel Fortlage, vice president, Information Technology, GHY International; and Bill Reeder, WW zEnterprise IT Optimization, Cloud, and Linux lead, IBM Systems & Technology Group.
In addition, Dr. Daniel Frye, vice president, Open Systems Development, IBM Systems & Technology Group, joined Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin for a panel discussion about the last 20 years of Linux. Also on the panel were open source luminaries Eben Moglen, director-counsel at the Software Freedom Law Center, and Jon "Maddog" Hall, executive director at Linux International.
