KVM Success Stories

Case studies and videos showcase how customers are benefiting from IBM technologies and KVM:

BG_Phoenics GmbH is an IT services provider for social security institutions and professional associations in Germany and has deployed the world's first production deployment of IBM zEnterprise with the zBladeCenter Extension. They use IBM zEnterprise 196 with the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension containing IBM BladeCenter HX5 servers with Intel Xeon processors. The blade servers are fully virtualized with KVM for the hypervisor layer. The HX5 blades will be used to host a number of different Linux-based systems, including a content management solution, an IBM WebSphere Application Server landscape, and some additional Tivoli Monitoring servers. EDELAP is an energy distributor in La Plata, Argentina servicing six cities. Using IBM System x, IBM BladeCenter and RHEL with KVM, Edelap has achieved numerous benefits: Software licensing costs reduced by 75%; batch processing performance improved by 50% (from 12 hours to six); time to provision a new server reduced from one day to one hour; reliability increased by replicating virtual servers on multiple physical servers; optimized data center space by consolidating 18 physical servers to seven; increased server density by running 30 virtual servers on six physical servers. "At EDELAP, we have seen how KVM has evolved over time. Our decision to use KVM was definitely a smart choice. It has allowed us to build a resilient infrastructure that is more efficient and cost effective to manage than the alternatives we considered," says Gonzalo D'Alessandro, head of Technology & Communications, EDELAP S.A.
