KVM Success Stories

Case studies and videos showcase how customers are benefiting from IBM technologies and KVM

BG-Phoenics GmbH
BG-Phoenics GmbH is an IT services provider for social security institutions and professional associations in Germany and has deployed the world's first production deployment of IBM zEnterprise with the zBladeCenter Extension. BG-Phoenics uses IBM zEnterprise 196 with the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension containing IBM BladeCenter HX5 servers with Intel Xeon processors. The blade servers are fully virtualized with KVM for the hypervisor layer. The HX5 blades will be used to host a number of different Linux-based systems, including a content management solution, an IBM WebSphere Application Server landscape, and some additional Tivoli Monitoring servers. Dutch Cloud
Dutch Cloud is a cloud service provider in the Netherlands. IBM SmartCloud Provisioning enables Dutch Cloud to move from a static model to highly dynamic service delivery. VLAN separation makes multi-tenant isolation at the network and presentation layer possible, helping to ensure that each customer environment runs securely and in isolation. Because KVM is close to both the kernel and the hardware it allows Dutch Cloud to optimize performance and work with cutting-edge hardware. Open Standards are very important to Dutch Cloud, being able to support both KVM and VMware hypervisors with IBM SmartCloud Provisioning enables them to offer choice to their clients. "KVM also saves us a lot of money, because of its lower licensing costs. We are using both KVM and VMware, so IBM SmartCloud Provisioning enables us to bring in customer environments on VMware and reduce costs by moving them to KVM. We've also found KVM much easier to install and manage," says Martijn van Zoeren, CEO, Dutch Cloud. Access the case study.

EDELAP
EDELAP is an energy distributor in La Plata, Argentina servicing six cities. Using IBM System x, IBM BladeCenter and RHEL with KVM, Edelap has achieved numerous benefits: Software licensing costs reduced by 75%; batch processing performance improved by 50% (from 12 hours to six); time to provision a new server reduced from one day to one hour; reliability increased by replicating virtual servers on multiple physical servers; optimized data center space by consolidating 18 physical servers to seven; increased server density by running 30 virtual servers on six physical servers. "At EDELAP, we have seen how KVM has evolved over time. Our decision to use KVM was definitely a smart choice. It has allowed us to build a resilient infrastructure that is more efficient and cost effective to manage than the alternatives we considered," says Gonzalo D'Alessandro, head of Technology & Communications, EDELAP S.A.
