KVM Success Stories - Case studies and videos showcase how customers are benefiting from IBM technologies and KVM

Dutch Cloud BV is an infrastructure service provider in The Netherlands that uses IBM SmartCloud Provisioning and IBM virtualization with KVM. Virtualization has allowed Dutch Cloud to dramatically increase its revenue, while keeping operational costs in check. "Virtualization is key for us," says Martijn Van Zoeren, CEO of Dutch Cloud, who was pleased with the ease of deploying KVM. He points out that it is also important that the SmartCloud Provisioning layer is not dependent on a certain hypervisor thus making it possible for the company to use KVM, Hyper-V, and VMware in the mix. Increasingly, people are talking about being more efficient with their hardware and software, and trying to save money on administration costs, adds Michael Day, distinguished engineer, IBM, observing that virtualization is a critical part of that effort.

BG-Phoenics GmbH is an IT services provider for social security institutions and professional associations in Germany and has deployed the world's first production deployment of IBM zEnterprise with the zBladeCenter Extensiom. They use IBM zEnterprise 196 with the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension containing IBM BladeCenter HX5 servers with Intel Xeon processors. The blade servers are fully virtualized with KVM for the hypervisor layer. The HX5 blades will be used to host a number of different Linux-based systems, including a content management solution, an IBM WebSphere Application Server landscape, and some additional Tivoli Monitoring servers. EDELAP is an energy distributor in La Plata, Argentina servicing six cities. Using IBM System x, IBM BladeCenter and RHEL with KVM, Edelap has achieved numerous benefits: Software licensing costs reduced by 75%; batch processing performance improved by 50% (from 12 hours to six); time to provision a new server reduced from one day to one hour; reliability increased by replicating virtual servers on multiple physical servers; optimized data center space by consolidating 18 physical servers to seven; increased server density by running 30 virtual servers on six physical servers. "At EDELAP, we have seen how KVM has evolved over time. Our decision to use KVM was definitely a smart choice. It has allowed us to build a resilient infrastructure that is more efficient and cost effective to manage than the alternatives we considered," says Gonzalo D'Alessandro, head of Technology & Communications, EDELAP S.A.
