Big data is real, and it is here for most organizations. Organizations now have data stores ranging from the hundreds of terabytes to multiple petabytes, according to a new survey that gathered input from 264 data managers and professionals who are subscribers to Database Trends and Applications. Respondents acknowledge that they are struggling with big data, which they define as any large-size data store that becomes unmanageable by standard technologies or methods. Unstructured data - business documents and graphical files - is the most difficult part of this challenge. They do not see traditional enterprise relational database systems as being up to the task.
