Informatica has announced a new big data management solution called Informatica Big Data Management that brings together big data Integration, big data quality and governance, and big data security in a single integrated solution. According to the vendor, while more than 67% of enterprises see the big opportunity in big data, the majority of big data projects fail. The new Informatica solution aims to help organizations more effectively overcome the data management challenges that are often at the root of big data project failures. In addition, Informatica Big Data Management is also designed to reduce the need for hand-coding and big data skill sets that are expensive and hard to come by.

The Independent Oracle Users Group is headed to San Francisco this October to join the Oracle technology community at Oracle OpenWorld 2015. Representing the voice of Oracle technology professionals, IOUG members will present more than 35 sessions on critical Oracle technology topics, including big data, cloud, Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, and more. Google, whose name became synonymous with internet search, is reorganizing to maintain its innovation and competitiveness. The company is creating a new public holding company called Alphabet, with Google as well as other companies, housed within the new structure. According to Larry Page, CEO of Google, the reorganization is part of an effort to avoid getting "too comfortable," observing in a blog post that in the tech industry, "where revolutionary ideas drive the next big growth areas, you need to be a bit uncomfortable to stay relevant.

What matters most in data management in 2015? There are a lot of moving parts that data managers and professionals need to attend to in today's enterprises. Databases need to be wide open and accessible to all parts of the business, but at the same time, secure and free of tampering. Unstructured forms of data—such as log data, documents, graphics, video, and social data—need to be prepared and ready for analysis in the same way structured files have been ready for years.

Despite a growing need for real-time information, only about one-quarter of big data projects result in tangible success, according to a survey by Capgemini and EMC, that was explored by Andreas Schmitz in a recent blog on the SAP website. Seventy-three percent of the 1,000 decision makers who responded to the survey declared their big data projects failures because of the lengthy process, sometimes taking months to get the information they need.

Pentaho users will now be able to use Apache Spark within Pentaho thanks to a new native integration solution that will enable the orchestration of all Spark jobs. Pentaho Data Integration (PDI), an effort initiated by Pentaho Labs, will enable customers to increase productivity, reduce maintenance costs, and dramatically lower the skill sets required as Spark is incorporated into big data projects.

Teradata has made enhancements to the Teradata Database's hybrid row and column capabilities to provide quicker access to data stored on columnar tables and drive faster query performance. Other relational database management systems store data tables in rows or columns, and each method offers benefits, depending on the application and type of data. However, they have been mutually exclusive. Teradata's new hybrid row and column capabilities allow the best of both worlds.

BackOffice Associates has unveiled an updated solution that will fully automate data quality maintenance without the level of manual research, validation, or updating previously required for most companies. Dubbed "dspCompose," the new application has been included in Version 6.2 of its Data Stewardship Platform (DSP), and is aimed at reducing the time and money spent resolving thousands of data issues.

"This acquisition is strategic, synergistic, and will strengthen our leadership in the big data and Hadoop market," said Shimon Alon, Attunity's chairman and CEO, during a conference call this morning discussing his company's purchase of Appfluent, a provider of data usage analytics for big data environments, including data warehousing and Hadoop. "We also expect it to accelerate our revenue growth and to be accretive to earnings." The total purchase price is approximately $18 million, payable in cash and stock, with additional earn-out consideration based on performance milestones.

2015 is going to be a big year for big data in the enterprise, according to Oracle. Neil Mendelson, Oracle vice president of big data and advanced analytics, shared Oracle's "Top 7" big data predictions for 2015. "The technology is moving very quickly and it is gaining to the point where a broader set of people can get into it - not just because it is affordable - but because they no longer require specialized skills in order to take advantage of it," he said.
