Sybase, Inc., has announced the latest version of Sybase Replication Server, specifically designed to move and synchronize data across the enterprise. Some of the key megatrends in the industry that helped to form the product strategy for Replication Server 15 include the pressures on organizations caused by burgeoning data volumes combined with customers' increasing requirements for real-time business analytics, Bill Zhang, product manager for Replication Server, Sybase, tells 5 Minute Briefing. EnterpriseDB, an open source database vendor, announced that IBM has licensed its technology to make it easier to deploy applications on DB2 9.7, the upcoming release of IBM's enterprise relational database. The solution is intended to make it easier to migrate applications from Oracle environments into open source or DB2 environments. The technology is among a set of capabilities in EnterpriseDB's Postgres Plus Advanced Server. These capabilities enable customers to run applications written for Oracle Database.

At its recent TechEd conference in Los Angeles, Microsoft announced new innovations from the SQL Server team. The next release, SQL Server 2008 R2 (formerly SQL Server ‘Kilimanjaro'), is intended to empower end users to make better decisions through self-service business intelligence, and help IT drive greater efficiency and reduce costs through new capabilities such as multi-server management and Master Data Services. The first Community Technology Preview (CTP) of SQL Server 2008 R2 will be available in the second half of 2009 and Microsoft is on track to ship SQL Server 2008 R2 in the first half of calendar year 2010. In 2010, Microsoft will also introduce complex event processing for real-time insight into streaming information. This will offers customers and partners faster time to solution and equal or better performance than competitive alternatives to gain insight from streaming information.

An inherent awkwardness exists in every many-to-many relationship between entities. Ambiguity causes this persistent awkwardness, primarily because a many-to-many relationship is such a fuzzy thing. In data discovery, encountering many-to-many relationships may actually expose a level of disregard about details by the subject matter experts.

The economy is a wreck and things will likely get worse before they improve. Unemployment is even worse; almost 600,000 jobs were lost in January 2009, sending the unemployment rate to 7.6%, the highest it has been in 16 years. So many data professionals are out there looking for their next challenge … and more probably will be job hunting before the year is out.

Sybase last week reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009. Total revenue for the first quarter of 2009 increased to $267.5 million from $260.1 million in the first quarter of 2008. License revenue grew to $89.3 million compared to $78.1 million in the first quarter of 2008. Services revenue was $135.0 million, and messaging revenue was $43.3 million in the 2009 first quarter.

IBM has announced version 9.7 of DB2 and InfoSphere Warehouse software, focused on transactional performance improvements in the DB2 database, and on expansion of analytics to XML data in the InfoSphere Data Warehouse. Both new products also reduce an even greater amount of space needed to store data, helping clients to gain significant savings on related costs including energy. This offering is also the industry's first database software that will deliver business analytics capabilities for both relational and XML data at the same time, according to IBM.

Sybase, Inc., announced that Sybase IQ 15, combined with Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire X4540 storage server and running the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS), recorded the best price/performance result in the TPC-H benchmark at 3000 GB scale factor for all non-clustered systems. The benchmark simulates decision support systems that analyze large volumes of data, executes queries with a high degree of complexity, and gives answers to critical business questions. Sybase says that the achievement illustrates the effectiveness of Sybase IQ 15 in helping to optimize IT asset utilization and significantly reduce ownership costs.

Ingres Corporation, a leading open source database management company, has announced that it has joined the Open Source Channel Alliance, a group founded by Red Hat and SYNNEX Corporation to extend the value of open source to a broad set of customers through SYNNEX's 15,000 resellers. Oracle announced yesterday morning that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Sun Microsystems, on the heels of a breakdown of a proposed acquisition by IBM. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, or $5.6 billion net of Sun's cash and debt.

In a relational database approach, regardless of whether one is considering persisted data or transitory query results, almost everything is viewed as a logical table. Associations between these envisioned tables are based on data values, versus the alternative to the pre-relational idea of linking multiple data structures via "hidden" pointers maintained by the system. Relationships among objects are ultimately derived from the semantics of a situation.

The idea of "SQL Server in the cloud" is all the rage as I write this article. Many SQL Server experts already predict the demise of the IT data center and a complete upending of the current state of our industry, in which large enterprises can spend millions of dollars on SQL Server licenses, hardware and staff. I have to admit, when I first heard about this idea, I was ecstatic. What could be better for an enterprise than to have all the goodness of a SQL Server database with none of the hardware or staffing issues? However, on deeper examination, there is much about which to be cautious.

Microsoft has announced that SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 is now available via free download to current SQL Server 2008 customers. According to the company, SP1 for SQL Server 2008 is primarily a roll-up of previous cumulative updates and offers increased supportability and stability. Microsoft is encouraging enterprise customers who are currently running SQL Server 2008 to download SP1 via the SQL Server 2008 Web site to take advantage of these improvements.

Have you noticed that dynamic SQL is more popular today than ever before? There are a number of factors contributing to the success of dynamic SQL. Commercial off-the-shelf applications, such as SAP, Siebel, and PeopleSoft, utilize dynamic SQL exclusively. In many cases, too, dynamic SQL is the default choice for in-house application development.

In formulating the tenets of relational theory, issues anent to order were explicitly addressed. These relational theory tenets included defining a relational database so that it need have no concern with the order of columns in a row, or with the order of rows in a table. And yet, such a stance seems counter-intuitive since the database brings structure and organization to content. Chaos is the primordial soup from which all things originated. Thus it seems only reasonable that a relational database, being the best and brightest of its kind, should abhor such chaos and bring ever more order instead, right?

Quest's new tool provides Oracle support for VSTS, enabling Oracle developers to fully participate with other VSTS team members throughout the entire application lifecycle. Previous to this, Oracle professionals could not benefit from the improvements in communication and workflow that VSTS offers. Oracle development in VSTS was limited, involved time-consuming manual processes, and did not support the system's new offline database development and design paradigm. With Quest's new tool, VSTS can now support both Oracle and SQL Server databases.
