The next major release of MarkLogic's enterprise NoSQL database platform is expected to be generally available by the end of this year. Database technology provider MongoDB today announced MongoDB Atlas, an elastic, on-demand cloud service that includes infrastructure and turnkey management. Citing feedback from a recent survey of more than 2,000 members of the MongoDB community the company says that 30% of respondents deploy on more than one public cloud. MongoDB Atlas will enable multi-vendor cloud strategies. To accommodate that use, the company says Atlas will be available on all popular cloud platforms - initially on Amazon Web Services, followed by Microsoft Azure, and then Google Cloud Platform.

IBM has introduced an update to its DB2 database software. IBM says the new release, IBM DB2 V11.1, will help developers more easily bridge on-premises applications to the cloud and enable a hybrid data architecture. IBM DB2 is also SQL-compatible with Oracle Database, making it possible to leverage existing skills to move applications from Oracle to DB2, according to IBM.

Cloudera is collaborating with Microsoft to build a new open source platform that will reduce the burden on application developers leveraging Spark.
