Data masking—a key technology for companies that need to comply with GDPR and other data privacy regulations—allows sensitive data to be hidden or obscured to protect against insider threats. It makes information available only to authorized users, minimizing risk, yet still allowing development and testing by third parties.

Organizational data silos are a universal problem across every industry, but businesses need to realize value from all data, which is impossible without insight into the full picture, explained Matt Burr, GM of FlashBlade, Pure Storage. There's been a lot of discussion recently about autonomous databases, which offer the promise of keeping database systems stable and performant while alleviating much of the tuning and configuration drudgery that DBAs must typically slog through. It is important to note that an autonomous database needs to strike a balance between giving administrators too much and too little control. Too much control takes the form of endless configuration and tuning parameters that place the burden of performance and stability on the operator. Too little control takes the form of automated behaviors that reduce the predictability of the system to an unacceptable level.

The MongoDB 4.0 release introduced multi-document transactions to the popular open source NoSQL DB. The lack of a transactional capability has been a key limiting factor in MongoDB uptake, so it's not surprising that the company, it's users and the technology press have been enthusiastic about this latest release. However, it's worth remembering that the transactional capabilities of MongoDB have been commonplace for many decades.

There's a catch to this though that frequently gets overlooked amidst the glowing analyst projections and keynote speeches about a limitless future in which systems and machines do all the heavy lifting and thinking for businesses. Data—the right kind, in the right sequence, in the right context—doesn't just magically drop out of the cloud. During a presentation at Oracle headquarters in Redwood Shores, in which Oracle CTO and chairman Larry Ellison unveiled the company's latest Autonomous Database Cloud Service, Oracle Autonomous Transaction Processing, he also sought to alleviate concerns that database automation will eliminate the jobs of longstanding Oracle database administrators. "I have got some bad news for you: No early retirement," he said. "A lot of the tedious things you were doing—allocating disk storage and upgrading the OS—you don't have to do. However, there is a lot more to do."
