Aerospike Inc. showcased its superior performance, price, and sustainability gains for real-time applications running on the recently announced Aerospike Database 7 at AWS re:Invent. According to the company, benchmarks of the Aerospike Database and AWS Graviton2 processors show more than 25 million transactions per second at under 1ms—a 1.6x price performance improvement, with 27% lower annual costs and 60% less energy consumption than an equivalent x86 cluster.

IBM announced that watsonx.governance will be generally available in early December to help businesses build trust with AI models and eliminate the mystery around the data going in, and the answers coming out. While generative AI, powered by Large Language Models (LLM) or Foundation Models, offers many use cases for businesses, it also poses new risks and complexities, including training data scraped from corners of the internet that cannot be validated as fair and accurate, all the way to a lack of explainable outputs, according to IBM.

IBM is releasing the new IBM Storage Scale System 6000, a cloud-scale global data platform designed to meet today's data intensive and AI workload demands, and the latest offering in the IBM Storage for Data and AI portfolio. According to the company, the new IBM Storage Scale System 6000 seeks to build on IBM's leadership position with an enhanced high performance parallel file system designed for data intensive use-cases. It provides up to 7M IOPs and up to 256GB/s throughput for read only workloads per system in a 4U (four rack units) footprint.

The original intention of surrogate keys across multidimensional database designs was to help optimize joins by keeping all keys, used for joining between facts and dimensions, both numeric and single-columned. Often such surrogates were generated as simple sequential numbers, 1, 2, 3…. Early versions of many relational database products had sub-optimal performance when joining data together via character strings—especially large quantities of data.

I can't remember the first time a database or storage vendor told me, "Disk is cheap," but it was probably in the 1990s.  Vendors like to say disk is cheap because it helps them sell more of it and to encourage bigger deployments. The fact is that data storage is getting cheaper all the time. When I entered the business, one GB of storage cost about $1000. Today, it's more like 10 cents—10,000 times less!

U.S. President Joe Biden signed an ambitious executive order on artificial intelligence that aims to balance the needs of cutting-edge technology companies with national security and consumer rights, creating an early set of guardrails that could be fortified by legislation and global agreements. The order is an initial step that is meant to ensure that AI is trustworthy and helpful, rather than deceptive and destructive. The transaction is valued at over $100 million, inclusive of incentives.
