Cloud is being embraced strongly at Oracle. That is the message loud and clear from the company, which brought its CloudWorld to New York City on January 13. During the event, which drew customers, analysts, and thought leaders, Oracle offered an overview of its cloud strategy and the progress the company has made thus far in addressing consumers and enterprise constituents in the cloud. Oracle's cloud strategy is very simple, said Thomas Kurian, president, Oracle Product Development. The idea is to bring Oracle's business applications, technology, software, database, middleware, analytic tools and infrastructure "to any customer anywhere in the world through the internet browser."

CA Technologies announced that its customer experience monitoring technology has been added as part of the "SAP Extended Diagnostics by CA Technologies" application. The SAP Extended Diagnostics application is intended to enable users to monitor the performance of applications from the business process down to the transaction-component level in real time.

Oracle has introduced its latest-generation NAS storage system, the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS4-4. A plug-in for Oracle Enterprise Manager enables monitoring and provisioning at the share, LUN or project level for all Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance models for end-to-end management visibility across the enterprise. "We have plugged in our analytics into Oracle Enterprise Manager to allow you to have that comprehensive view," said Oracle executive vice president John Fowler during a recent webcast.

For the 22nd consecutive year, IBM topped the annual list of U.S. patent recipients. The company just announced that it received a record 7,534 patents in 2014, and that on average, IBM inventors earned more than 20 patents a day. After IBM, the next top patent earner in 2014 was Samsung with 4,952. During IBM's 22 years at the top of the patent list, IBM inventors have received more than 81,500 U.S. patents.

"jBASE was the industry's first database-independent solution. Its more contemporary architecture allows Pick-based applications to natively interact with the underlying Windows or UNIX operating system, and store data in SQL Server, Oracle, and the cloud, which fits perfectly with our vision for the future," noted Paul Giobbi, president of Zumasys.

IBM is partnering with Equinix, Inc., an interconnection and data center company, to help provide enterprises direct access to the full portfolio of cloud services from SoftLayer, an IBM Company, via the Equinix Cloud Exchange. Equinix also announced Cloud Exchange enhancements, including API functionality that makes it easier for service providers to use a single interface to the Cloud Exchange, resulting in scalable, private and secure connections to their cloud services with near real-time provisioning.

Rackspace has announced its affiliation with the OpenPOWER Foundation, and is now an official member. With its membership in the OpenPower Foundation, Rackspace says it also expects to provide benefit to two other communities: OpenStack and the Open Compute Project. Rackspace announced its affiliation with OpenPOWER in a blog authored by Aaron Sullivan, ?senior director and distinguished engineer at Rackspace. According to Sullivan, Rackspace has already been involved with OpenPOWER for more than 18 months.

Espresso Logic is adding data virtualization for mobile and web app back-end developers to its reactive programming-based back-end-as-a-service (BaaS). "We have a very unique technology that we have developed called reactive programming. As a user, whenever the spreadsheet is changed it will always recalculate itself and give you a result. Up until now, no one has really used this method for back-end development," explained R. Paul Singh, CEO of Espresso Logic.

In its fourth big data-related acquisition this year, Teradata announced it has acquired RainStor, a privately held company specializing in online big data archiving on Hadoop. RainStor's technology offers three key advantages, explains Chris Twogood, vice president of products and services at Teradata. It enables extreme data compression with the ability to compress data from 10x to 40x, Rainstor data is immutable which is important for compliance and security regulations, and it is all accessible by SQL.

Neil Mendelson, Oracle vice president of big data and advanced analytics, shared Oracle's "Top 7" big data predictions for 2015. Oracle has announced its latest-generation NAS storage system, the Oracle ZFS Storage ZS4-4. Co-engineered with Oracle Database 12c, the ZFS Storage ZS4-4 provides analytics for pluggable databases, doubles previous generation performance to enable faster time to actionable intelligence, and also provides high-level protection against security breaches with fine-grained encryption capabilities. The OS 8.3 adds over 30 enhancements and three new innovations that expand Oracle's leadership in NAS performance, efficiency, and application-engineered storage, said Oracle executive vice president John Fowler.

With the latest update to the Oracle Database Appliance, Oracle has built in the notion of a "dev/test appliance," according to Sohan DeMel, vice president, product strategy and business development, Oracle. According to DeMel, Oracle has found that customers use five, six, or as many as seven times as many systems for their test and development functions because there are so many different aspects to testing - such as integration testing, user acceptance testing, and stress testing. While the dev/testing capability is not new to the market, DeMel points out that what is different about the Database Appliance approach to dev/test is that Oracle has essentially commoditized the capability and is providing it as a core platform feature and not something that it is up-selling and charging customers more for.

Town Sports International (TSI) operates fitness clubs in major United States metropolitan areas, including New York, Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia. TSI needed a high-availability, high-performance platform to host its updated Oracle E-Business Suite applications, but wanted to avoid the complex and lengthy deployment timelines typically associated with integrating servers, networks, and storage from multiple vendors, as well as the costs and data center space requirements associated with such projects. To meet its goals, TSI deployed an architecture based on two Oracle Database Appliances with the virtualized platform, one for test and one for production, as the platform for its deployment of Oracle Database with Real Application Clusters, Oracle VM and Oracle E-Business Suite.
